Tsunami & Earthquake hit Sulawesi is a huge disaster, it is isolated, remote and alone more than ever we need to seed & help people to help themselves. The Risk: if the international standard GOVT/NGO refugee mode is followed tens of thousands of people will be tent camp relocated when 50% of the affected population only need to clear their rubbled home and recover the toilet / water etc from there they can used the old house timbers, roofing iron etc to build a temporary home "they just need tools and stupid NGO's / Governments/ Army etc will not provide the big hammers/bolt cutters and tools they need, but the standard tent camp model is to hub people together in 'tent camps where trauma and hundreds of thousands of men will sit and do nothing and quickly become food and Aid reliant - the thinking is flawed and a modern Aid model needs to be followed. Sure some people need to be relocated, but most don't - they just need tools - these villages are not without skills to help themselves. Rain is coming, sensible thinking is needed, we have proven this works.
. We have our Lombok Hero's Movement and the 'Tools for Lives big hammer project' now systemised in Lombok, tens of thousands of people are safely out of tent camps and into their own temporary homes with our tools still going from village to village.

The rain is coming hundreds will now die unnecessarily .. During the past 7 weeks have given more than 3,000 young men the chance to get their families and into thousands of homes by providing thousands of big hammers / hundreds of bolt cutters and tools which we loan, when finished these keep going from village to village clearing earthquake rubbled old homes, recovering the original house pad and importantly recovering toilet, they importantly also recover all wood, roofing iron, nails, windows, doors, bricks, steel, beds, stoves etc and then use these recovered materials to build thousands of temp homes to get families ' out of flooding - muddy tent camps and back to normal, back to farming, and off aid ..
Thousands of families are so very greatful for the use of our unique tools and our support

STEP ONE - BOLT CUTTERS, BIG HAMMERS: Tools are loaned & keep rolling over & over. ‘big hammer teams’ of 30/50 100 homes villages have all been cleared & re built in 10 days.
STEP TWO - BREAK DOWN OLD HOUSE: BREAK DOWN OLD HOUSE: clear & recover the house pad & toilet. Work together. Break down homes, all dangerous structures, high walls etc. Be careful, have safety person, clear dangerous debris, use ropes.
STEP THREE - RECYCLE = Means free temp house!
Save all the old materials; Recover Toilet 70%, Septic 90%, Wood 80%, Roofing Iron 90%, Bricks 50%, Windows & Doors 70%, Steel 80%, Beds 60%, Nails 50%, Wire 50%, Stoves and household equipment 50%.

STEP FOUR - BUILD: Temp Homes take 2 men 2 days. Don’t Forget Sick & Old People, help all to get safe temp home. Villagers are not without skills, they just need big hammers, bolt cutters & tools.
STEP FIVE - TOOLS: Grow more teams.
DO MORE: Help others, Continue to Rebuild Village, Temp schools, Temp Mosque, Water, Power, even TV. Get back to normal, crop planting etc prepare for rainy season
STEP SIX - SEED OTHERS: Govt / Army / NGO’s to supply the tools people need to help themselves.

Five easy steps for a free temporary home:
3. WE LEND & ROTATES TOOLS TO VILLAGE GROUPS:
We have literally tons of tools that we are dispersing. Over & over again tools rotate through villagers ... big hammers, bolt cutters & manpower break down EQ rubbled homes. Homes are photoed & Geo located by ‘Timestamp App’. Shows us transparency and 100% use of tools. |
Mission:
1) to supply with urgency big hammers, bolt cutter & tools that empower 30 to 50 men village teams in clearing their house basis. Using tools to recover the toilets, wood, roofing iron, doors, windows, even nails. For homeowners to then build thousands of comfortable, earthquake safe temporary homes using the cleared house base & free materials.
2) To promote & rapidly grow a movement to show how positive, fast and easy our model is and to seed 45,000 temp homes. To promote this to leaders, government / Army / BMPD etc and for them to take on the concept as their own and assist Lombok people with tools.

STRENGTHS & OPPORTUNITIES:
KEY FACTS & CHALLENGES:
- Empower local work teams with the provision of tools
- Use "time stamp" to photograph, geo locate and document EQ rubbled homes
- Recover concrete base and toilet
- Salvage reusable building materials
- Rebuild EQ proof temporary homes
- Utilise army logistics and regiments
- Set up tool stores and accountability (the tools are on loan and will be required by the next village)
KEY FACTS & CHALLENGES:
- Estimated 396,000 people displaced
- Camp locations are rice fields and dust bowls
- Infectious disease epidemics and outbreaks
- Mortality rates for elderly and young in camps double
- Estimated 83,392 EQ rubbled homes
- Rainy season
- Government reporting process
- Availability/cost of required building materials, transport and labour
Around 400,000 people are suffering in tent cities with conditions only worsening as the rain approaches, disease and infectious outbreaks like malaria have already started. (150,000 homes can't be reached by buildozers, BMPB)
With as little as $100,000 of tools & 5,000 men clearing their house bases & using their broken house materials, 45,000 temporary homes for the poor could be built in 4 to 6 months.
The solution is under our feet & good news, the army are now with us.

PROJECT WELCOME VIDEO:
|
The scope of this project is ambitious but achievable. Below is a synopsis of the main issues and how we hope to overcome them.
KEY FACTS & CHALLENGES:
- Estimated 396,000 people displaced
- Camp locations are rice fields and dust bowls
- Infectious disease epidemics and outbreaks
- Mortality rates for elderly and young in camps double
- Estimated 83,392 EQ rubbled homes
- Rainy season is weeks away and rain has already started, people need to plant their crops
- Government reporting & implementation process is slow and clogged with confusion.
- Availability/cost of required building materials, transport and labour.
- Local forest parks are targets of businesses who use earthquake urgency as reason to destroy them
PROJECT STRENGTHS:
Empower local work teams with the provision of tools
Recover the House base and equally importantly the toilet.
Salvage reusable building materials.
Rebuild EQ proof temporary homes.
Utilise army logistics and regiments.
Set up tool stores and accountability (the tools are on loan and will be required by the next village).
Utilise BNPB GIS system.
Positively report progress on a communal platform.
Have the army take over tool acquisition and distribution.
The core concepts are each designed to overcome a core problem but also have many fringe benefits...
Empowering the local community utilises the human capital that is currently sitting idle lacking leadership or a plan. Leaders are not practical backgrounds and their thinking is for the use for heavy machinery which destroys the house bases, toilets & recyclable materials. Also machinery expencive, can't reach most locations and in several weeks will be unable to move (rain is coming). It also makes mass labor import unnecessary, encourages community cohesion, combats the effects of trauma and is synergistic with Indonesia’s existing village structure.
By clearing EQ rubble and salvaging the concrete slab you are left with a flat, stable base for rebuilding. In the process of clearing, recycling the materials reduces the need to import building supplies which would not be readily available in such unanticipated demand and such a short time-frame (rain is coming). The pilot villages are showing incredible statistics on recyclables (link).
Recovering the toilet is a key goal within the project. Many of the EQ rubbled homes have “squat toilets”, they’re low lying and were generally undamaged in the EQ. Epidemics and infectious outbreaks usually occur “several days, weeks or months in the post impact or recovery phases after major disasters.” This is due to a lack of basic sanitation facilities, basic hygiene and mass population displacement concentrated in camps. In recovering the toilet, we gain access to plumbing, thus providing basic hygiene and sanitation in the new temporary homes and reduce potential for an epidemic. The need to move out of the camps is further exacerbated by their location. Rice fields and dust-bowls will flood in the rainy season and cause further population displacement.
Army involvement allows fast and mass implementation, which is essential given the time-frame (rain is coming). Future goal is for army resources to take over and provide the required tools that will see this project provide the massive number of homes required for the 398,000 displaced. It also lends authenticity, allows us to bypass the Government documentation stage required for compensation, comforts the community and builds trust in the Government.
Geo mapping team locations with GIS allows us to track progress and identify areas that need attention. It also allows us to gather data, adjust strategy in real time and formulate a model that might be viable for future disasters of a comparative nature. Positively reporting through various social media platforms allows the community and everybody to follow the projects progress. It’s a chance for people to share their stories, to nominate a “hero of the week”, pose questions and grow through this disaster together. #gotong royong
